M365 Subject Matter Expert (SME)
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Microsoft 365 Subject Matter Expert (SME) to
lead the strategy, architecture, and support of our enterprise M365 environment. The ideal
candidate will possess deep technical expertise across the full M365 suite and associated cloud
infrastructure, acting as a key technical advisor to cross-functional teams and leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and Implementation: Lead the assessment, design, planning, and implementation of M365 solutions and services to meet business needs and technical requirements.
- Administration & Support: Provide expert-level support, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting for the entire M365 platform, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive, and Azure AD (Entra ID).
- Security & Compliance: Design and manage M365 security frameworks, policies, and technologies, including identity and access management (IAM), data loss prevention (DLP), conditional access, and Microsoft Purview solutions (e.g., sensitivity labels, retention policies).
- Automation: Utilize automation and scripting (primarily PowerShell) to manage systems efficiently, automate security operations, and enhance service delivery.
- Collaboration & Power Platform: Provide expert guidance on SharePoint best practices and act as a technology lead for integrating M365 applications with the Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI).
- Guidance & Documentation: Develop and maintain technical documentation, policies, and training materials. Guide project teams and mentor junior staff to ensure best practices are followed.
- Monitoring & Optimization: Monitor the health, performance, and usage of M365 services, performing root cause analysis of incidents and recommending continuous improvements.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum of 5-10 years of experience supporting Microsoft 365 in a large corporate or government environment.
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), Conditional Access, MFA, and Privileged Identity Management (PIM).
- Strong knowledge of the Microsoft Defender suite (Defender for Endpoint, Identity, Office 365) and security frameworks like NIST or ISO 27001.
- Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for administration and automation.
- In-depth knowledge of SharePoint Online administration, architecture, and governance.
- Experience with Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions, with a strong focus on Microsoft Intune.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
